Silkies

New for 2019

This is a project that has been three years in the making and I hope

you enjoy them as much as we have.

The Silkie is a breed of chicken named for its atypically fluffy plumage, which is said to feel like silk and satin. The breed has several other unusual qualities, such as black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot, whereas most chickens only have four. They are often exhibited in poultry shows, and appear in various colors. In addition to their distinctive physical characteristics, Silkies are well known for their calm, friendly temperament. It is among the most docile of poultry. Hens are also exceptionally broody, and care for young well.  They are commonly used to hatch eggs from other breeds and bird species due to their broody nature.  It is unknown exactly where Silkies come from or when these fowl with their singular combination of attributes first appeared, but the most well documented point of origin is ancient China.  Silkies lay a fair number of eggs, of a cream color, but production is often interrupted due to their extreme tendency to go broody; a hen will produce 130 eggs in an ideal year. In addition to being good mothers, Silkies are universally renowned for their calm, friendly temperament. They do well in confinement, and interact very well with children. The earliest surviving written account of Silkies comes from Marco Polo, who wrote of a "furry chicken" in the 13th century during his travels in Asia. In the 21st century, Silkies are one of the most popular and ubiquitous ornamental breeds of chicken. They are often kept as ornamental fowl or pet chickens by backyard keepers. Their feathers lack functioning barbicels, and are thus similar to down on other birds. This characteristic leaves Silkies unable to fly and giving them their silk like feathers. A 4 foot fence is all that is required making it very easy for backyard flock owners. There are different standards of Silkies such as bantam sized and standard size, bearded and non bearded. We carry only the Bantam which weigh in at 3 pounds for males and 2 pounds for females. All our Silkies in our breeding flock are bearded with 5 toes but because of their genetic back ground some chicks could hatch with 4 toes. There are many different colors of silkies. We carry three. Splash, Buff and White Silkie Day Old Chicks - $10.00 each. (Limit 6 of each color) All our chicks are sold as straight run. Extras are always included. $45 shipping and handling charge for up to 24 one day old chicks will apply to all orders within the continental United States. The minimum number of day old chicks is 15.  This is to insure warmth in the box during shipping.  You can mix and match from all our breeds. All chicks are shipped Priority Mail Express with a heat pack and Grow Gel. Silkie Hatching Eggs - $4.99 each. We can safety fit 18 eggs per box.  Shipping and handing for up to 18 eggs is $14 within the continental United States. Hatching eggs are shipped Priority Mail USPS.  You may mix and match any of our breeds. We do not guarantee shipped eggs will hatch. We do guarantee eggs will be fresh and in good shape for incubation. For more information regarding hatching eggs please see our FAQs.
